Exercise Must Be Done with Wisdom and Order

Exercise is a significant part of overall health, but even it must be done carefully and with wisdom and order. This season of my life I am carefully getting into shape. Even with exercise we need to practice self-control. Some of us can overdo it and the results are injury. How many of us know someone who has past sports injuries mostly because they overdid it?

Because of my own past injuries, I am easing into it. Over the past month I have been walking on my treadmill again. Today I walked 2 miles and that was an accomplishment. I stretched for 10 minutes afterwards, and felt really good. But a few weeks ago 1 mile was an accomplishment. I am working toward a 5K in May, which I will most likely walk with a little jogging. Each week I am adding a little bit more distance so that my body can adjust.

But my goal is not to run a marathon or be my wedding weight (Hello, I've had 7 children!) or only eat organic foods. Just a goal of a healthy heart, joints that don't ache, and more energy to sustain me throughout the day. I've increased my water intake, stopped stuffing myself, and try to incorporate more whole grains, "fruit of the vine" and vegetables in my diet.

As I've reread the Word of Wisdom, I wonder if the "evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days" might include those who promote the ever-changing healthcare advice, exercise equipment and women's magazines on the market today. But I am confident that with careful pondering it out in my mind, I can find "wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures" to make good choices and accomplish overall health for me.

Felt 4.9 Earthquake in Utah on April 15, 2010

Did you feel the 4.9 earthquake April 15th about 5:59 p.m. in Northern Utah? If so please report your observations to the USGS at this link, Did You Feel It?

The epicenter was 5 miles from Randolph, Utah which is in the North/East corner of the state about 70 miles east of Logan. The largest Utah earthquake in 18 years.

We felt it here in Farmington, but my husband who was driving in a car on his way home from work did not feel it. I was home with three of my children and we all felt it. It lasted about 15 seconds, and because I was on my bed I could feel the gentle shaking. We were relatively calm, but on alert.

Please share or comment here as well.

Poisonings: Utah Residents Die at Twice the National Rate

"Whether it’s an overdose of pain medications or being overcome by toxic fumes, Utah residents die at twice the national rate from poisonings, according to new state figures. The Utah Department of Health reports 21.3 Utah deaths from poisonings each year per 100,000 residents. The national average is 11 per 100,000 people.

Most poison exposures occur with products that are used often. Below are a few tips to help you reduce the chance of poison exposure in your home or workplace.

• Store all household products and medicines out of reach and out of sight of small children and pets.
• Store all medicines separately from household products and household chemicals away from food.
• Always read the label before using and follow the instructions on medicines, cleaners, pesticides, automotive, lawn and garden products for their proper use.
• Never store potential poisons in containers used for eating and drinking. Store all potential poisons in their original, labeled containers. Leave the original labels on all products.
• Never refer to medicines as candy to a young child.
• Avoid taking medication in front of small children.
• Turn on a light when taking and giving medication.
• When you are using household chemical products and medicines, never let them out of your sight, even if you must take them along when answering the telephone or doorbell.
• Clean out your medicine cabinet periodically.
• Use child resistant closures.
• Remember that carbon monoxide exposures are considered a poisoning, and make sure your home has a working detector."

Make sure chemical products (bleach, cleaning products, vitamins, medicines, etc.) in your food storage rooms , closets and pantries are also out of reach of small children.
